WATSU: A popular therapy in Florida! Watsu is aquatic therapy performed in skin temperature water (heated pool). It quiets the mind, relaxes the body and opens the heart. It is a nurturing combination of massage, yoga-like stretches and point work. In this deep state of relaxation body, mind and spirit are empowered to heal in extraordinary ways.
HOT STONE MASSAGE: Hot Stone Massage is a form of body work that involves the application of heated stones to the body within the context of a therapeutic massage. Round, smooth stones are heated to a luxurious warmth, oiled and used to massage the body. Heat penetrates deeply, prompting profound relaxation, detoxification, and relief of long-standing muscular tension, stress and fatigue.
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE: Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fiber's of the muscles, tendons and fascia.
NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPY: Neuromuscular therapy is recognized by the American Academy of Pain Management as an effective treatment for soft tissue injury (such as a muscle strain). It consists of alternating levels of concentrated pressure on the areas of muscle spasm. The pressure is usually applied with the fingers, knuckles, or elbow. After the muscle is relaxed lactic acid will be released, and the muscle starts receiving enough blood and oxygen. It can feel painful at first, but the pressure of the massage should alleviate the muscle spasm. It is extremely important to communicate with the massage therapist regarding the pressure - whether the pressure is too much, too little, getting better, getting worse. The pressure should never be overly painful. In fact, most people describe the pressure as “good pain”. Following a neuromuscular therapy massage, any soreness that presents itself should fade after twenty-four to thirty-six hours. The muscles that were tight should remain noticeably more relaxed for four to fourteen days, depending on stress, activity level, and severity of pain prior to treatment.
MYOFASCIAL RELEASE: Connective tissue, or fascia, is everywhere in the body. It wraps cells and then organs, envelops arteries, veins and nerves and then groups them to form units. It is part of every muscle and surrounds it to form the tendon that attaches to the bone. Lubricated by a special fluid, it enables muscles to glide on each other, allowing us to move around, to walk and to dance. It is weakened by cortisone, the hormone produced by the adrenal gland in response to stress. Fascia is adversely affected by poor postural habits, lack of use from inactivity and misuse from too much activity. Chronic strains, trauma and stress cause the fascia to thicken and shorten which then makes it either weak or tight. Fascia becomes fibrotic and the owner becomes increasingly stiff and immobilized. Joints get pulled out of alignment and muscle tightens, making movement more difficult and painful. Posture is increasingly overwhelmed by the forces of gravity. Internally, organs get disarranged and function less effectively. Tolerance to stress is decreased. Fascia forms barriers to the spread of infection, disease and tumors and is an important part of the body's immune system. Its chemistry monitors the inflammatory response while its lubricating fluid delivers antibodies and white blood cells to fight infection and to assist in healing of wounds and fractures and in the formation of scar tissue. When it becomes stiff, release can help get the fascia re-lubricated and mobilized for optimum health.
SPORTS MASSAGE: For the professional or amateur athlete to prevent injury or treat chronic sports-related injuries.
THAI MASSAGE: No lubrication is used and the client remains fully clothed. The massage is done on a mat on the floor and techniques include pressure applied to energy lines and passive yoga-type stretches. It increases range of movement and joint flexibility and decreases muscle soreness and muscular tension. For the athlete, it helps prevent injury and enhances performance.
PREGNANCY MASSAGE: Massage is a vastly under-used tool for fostering a healthy pregnancy. Massage can decrease stress and improve relaxation, improve lymph drainage, benefit muscle tone and elasticity and have a balancing effect on glands, all of which are of huge benefit during pregnancy to both mother and baby.
REFLEXOLOGY: Reflexology is a science mapping reflex points in the hands and feet that correspond to the organs and systems of the entire body. By stimulating these points, you can have an effect on the rest of the body. Our therapists take this one step further by following up with therapeutic massage on the entire body where tender reflexology points indicate work is needed.
HEALING TOUCH: Healing Touch is a biofield therapy that is an energy based approach to health and healing. It uses touch to influence the human energy system with non-invasive techniques to clear, energize, and balance thus affecting physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health and healing. It is based on a heart-centered caring relationship in which the practitioner and client come together energetically to facilitate the client's health and healing. The goal in Healing Touch is to restore harmony and balance in the energy system placing the client in a position to self heal.
LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE: Although crucial to the health of the immune system, the lymphatic system is often ignored. Your lymphatic system can be compared to a freeway. When congested, nothing moves. Your lymphatic system affects every organ and cell in your body. When your lymphatic system's drainage becomes blocked, you cannot eliminate toxins efficiently. Moving stagnant lymph flow is a key to rejuvenation and health. Healthy lymph flow enhances the body's natural healing ability.
CRANIALSACRAL THERAPY: CranialSacral Therapy is a treatment administered on the table while the client is fully clothed. This treatment uses very light finger pressure on the cranium and sacrum to realign, balance the body, improve the nervous system and promote better flow of the cerebrospinal fluid. Its beneficial effects will manifest in the entire body.
CHAKRA BALANCING: The seven major chakras act as receivers and transmitters for subtle energies. They function on physical, emotional, spiritual and energetic levels. Balance is the key to health and well-being. Imbalance can manifest in many various ways, from a general feeling of something slightly off or not feeling quite right to pain and illness. Correcting the vibration with accompanying music, enhancing the color and rotation ensures each chakra is in tune with the universe and each other thereby increasing the feeling of peace and well-being while restoring balance for health.

Massage is a nearly perfect therapy because it taps into the body's natural ability to heal itself, often eliminating the need for medication.
Massage is one of the oldest and simplest forms of medical care used to ease pain and anxiety providing relief to practically everyone-from infants to seniors, and from the competitive athlete to the busy executive. Anyone who has ever experienced a good massage can tell you just how beneficial it can be to your overall well-being. In fact, it can help with everything from tight muscles, to fibromyalgia and lower back pain for pregnant women.
The skin is the body's largest sensory organ and thousands of specialized receptors in the dermis, the second layer of skin, react to external stimuli such as heat, cold and pressure by sending messages through the nervous system to the brain.
Gentle massage affects the nervous system through nerve endings in the skin, stimulating the release of endorphins, the body's natural 'feel good' chemicals. Stronger massage stimulates blood circulation to improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues and helps the lymphatic system to flush away waste products. It eases tense and knotted muscles and stiff joints, improving mobility and flexibility.
Massage is said to increase activity of the vagus nerve, one of ten cranial nerves, that affects the secretion of food absorption hormones, heart rate and respiration. It has proven to be an effective therapy for a variety of health conditions - particularly stress related tension, which experts believe accounts for as much as 80%-90% of disease.
The benefits of massage extend beyond the physical. Massage is unique in that it provides tangible stimulation through touch. Touch is our first sensual experience and remains, along with smell, the most immediate and evocative link between mind and body. Many people have reported cathartic experiences during a massage. Just as a massage unwinds tired and stressed muscles, it also may very well unwind repressed emotions that are not processed during a hectic day thereby, among other things, reducing anxiety.

Cancer and Massage
Message:
A recent study funded in part by the National Institutes of Health/National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that massage therapy may have immediate effects on pain and mood for patients with advanced cancer.
Researchers at 15 United States hospices in the Population-based Palliative Care Research Network investigated the benefits of massage versus simple touch therapy—placing both hands on specific body sites—in patients with advanced cancer. The study group of 380 participants who were experiencing moderate to severe pain was randomly assigned to receive six 30-minute sessions of either massage or simple touch therapy over a two-week period.
Results showed both groups experienced significant improvements in pain relief, physical and emotional distress and quality of life. Improvement in pain and mood immediately following treatment was greater with massage than with simple touch, but researchers did not find sustained effects for either therapy.
The researchers concluded that massage therapy may provide some immediate relief for patients with advanced cancer. They also suggest that simple touch, which can be provided by family members and volunteers, may help these patients as well.
Pain and depressed mood are common problems for patients with advanced cancer. While drug therapies can reduce symptoms, they don't always work and often have troublesome side effects. A recent study in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics found that even though pain is one of the most common symptoms of cancer patients, many of them do not receive adequate therapy for the pain caused by their disease or treatments.
Symptom relief is an important part of end-of-life care, and small studies have suggested that massage therapy may benefit people with advanced cancer. Researchers think that massage may interrupt the cycle of distress, offering brief physical and psychological benefits. Physically, massage may decrease inflammation and edema, increase blood and lymphatic circulation, and relax muscle spasms. Psychologically, massage may promote relaxation, release endorphins and distract from pain and depression.
"When patients near the end of life, the goals of medical care change from trying to cure disease to making the patient as comfortable as possible," says Jean S. Kutner, MD, MSPH, head of the massage/touch therapy study which appeared in the Annals of Internal Medicine. "This study is important because it shows massage is a safe and effective way to provide immediate relief to patients with advanced cancer."
